SSAB

SSAB is a Nordic and US-based steel company that builds a stronger, lighter and more sustainable world through value added steel products and services. Working with our partners, SSAB has developed SSAB Fossil-free™ steel and plans to reinvent the value chain from the mine to the end customer, largely eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from our own operations. SSAB Zero™, a largely carbon emission-free steel based on recycled steel, further strengthens SSAB’s leadership position and our comprehensive, sustainable offering independent of the raw material. SSAB has employees in over 50 countries and production facilities in Sweden, Finland and the US.

Industry/business sector: Steel Production

Main focus areas: Circular Economy, Green Construction, Zero Emission Steel

Headquarters: Stocholm, Sweden

Location in Spain: Madrid and Vitoria

Why are you a part of Sweden + Spain Green Alliance?: Steel is vital to modern life but also responsible for around 7% of global CO2 emissions. By developing steel with virtually zero fossil CO2 emissions, SSAB is helping customers to reduce their CO2 emissions across the whole value chain and together shaping a greener world.

How does your company contribute to the green transition?: In 2021, SSAB produced the world’s first fossil-free steel by using HYBRIT® technology, replacing coal by hydrogen in the ore reduction process, and emitting water instead of CO2. In 2023 SSAB introduced SSAB Zero™ steel, the first commercial steel produced with virtually zero carbon emissions by using recycled steel and fossil-free energy.

Sustainability goals: The steel industry is currently one of the highest carbon emitters, accounting for around 7% of all CO2 emissions globally. While SSAB is already one of the world’s most CO2 efficient steel producers, we know that the industry still has a long way to go. SSAB is leading the green transformation of the steel industry and is aiming to largely eliminate fossil CO2 emissions from our own operations.

Highlighted project(s) in Spain/Sweden: In September 2024 SSAB and Alstom have entered a partnership for the supply of steel made with close to zero fossil carbon emissions. The first delivery of SSAB Zero™ took already place in 2024 and is used in Alstom’s first Traxx Shunter™ locomotives, a new platform designed for shunting and trackwork operations. By supplying steel with virtually zero carbon emission footprint for the Traxx Shunter™ locomotive, SSAB will contribute in the delivery of Alstom’s sustainable procurement strategy, which includes the reduction of the carbon emissions of Purchased Goods & Services by 30% by 2030.
